UK Raises the Bar for Skilled Worker Visas

The United Kingdom tightened its main work visa route on 22 July 2025, following the government's Immigration White Paper published in May 2025. The changes affect anyone planning to move to the UK on a Skilled Worker visa.

What changed

  • Higher skill level. New Skilled Worker sponsorships generally require a job at degree level (RQF 6) or above. Roles below that level are eligible only if they appear on a temporary shortage list or the Immigration Salary List, and only for a limited period.
  • Higher salary threshold. The general salary threshold rose from £38,700 to £41,700 a year, alongside higher going rates for individual occupations.
  • Care workers. Overseas recruitment of care workers and senior care workers through the Skilled Worker route has closed to new applicants from abroad.
  • Transitional protection. Workers sponsored before 22 July 2025 can generally continue, extend their stay and change employer under the previous skill-level rules.

The White Paper also announced further reforms, including proposals for a longer qualifying period before settlement. These are being introduced in stages, so check the latest guidance before you plan a move.

What it means for job seekers

For professionals with degrees and well-paid job offers, the UK remains an option. For many mid-skilled roles in logistics, manufacturing, construction and hospitality, however, the route is now closed or much harder to use.

Many of these roles are in demand within the EU. Poland, Lithuania, Germany and Croatia all recruit workers from abroad at a range of skill levels — see our guide to choosing your first work destination in Europe.
