The latest statistics reveal that a significant portion of new German citizens were formerly Syrian nationals. Syrians accounted for 83,150 individuals, representing 28% of all naturalizations.

Other prominent nationalities acquiring German citizenship include:

• Turkey: 22,525 (8%)

• Iraq: 13,545 (5%)

• Russia: 12,980 (4%)

• Afghanistan: 10,085 (3%)

A notable trend is the dramatic increase in Russian nationals obtaining citizenship—rising by 551% compared to 2023, from 1,995 to 12,980 people. Similarly, naturalizations among Turkish nationals increased by 110%, adding 11,790 new German citizens from this group. Syrian citizenship naturalizations also saw a 10% increase compared to last year.

Integration Efforts and Policy Impact

The German government’s recent integration policies have played a crucial role in driving these numbers. Approximately 86% of naturalizations in 2024 were co-naturalizations, including spouses and children, highlighting the importance of family reunification.

Additionally, 7% of naturalizations were granted under special integration provisions, such as reduced residency requirements for those demonstrating exceptional integration efforts.

The average residency period before naturalization increased to 11.8 years in 2024, up from 10.9 years in 2023. Syrian nationals, in particular, had an average stay of 7.4 years, compared to 6.8 years the previous year.
