Armenia and the European Union are continuing high-level discussions aimed at achieving visa liberalisation, a move that could eventually grant Armenian citizens visa-free travel to the EU’s Schengen Area.
In a recent meeting, Armenia’s Minister of Internal Affairs, Arpine Sargsyan, and Ambassador Vassilis Maragos, Head of the EU Delegation to Armenia, addressed the progress of the visa liberalisation process, highlighting strong diplomatic ties and effective cooperation between the two sides.
According to News, Ambassador Maragos praised the deepening of EU–Armenia relations, noting that their bilateral cooperation continues to expand into new strategic sectors.
Cooperation in Security and Emergency Services
Alongside visa policy, both parties also reviewed current cooperation programmes in law enforcement and rescue services, with a focus on institutional capacity building and cross-border collaboration, as reported by Armen Press.
Armenia–EU Visa Liberalisation Plan Expected by June
In April 2025, Nelly Davtyan, head of the Migration and Citizenship Service within Armenia’s Interior Ministry, confirmed that an EU–Armenia Visa Liberalisation Action Plan is expected to be finalised by June 2025.
Drawing from the experiences of other countries that have successfully negotiated similar agreements with the EU, Davtyan said that Armenia is well-positioned to progress.

To meet EU requirements, Armenia has announced that it will begin issuing biometric passports and ID cards in the first half of 2026, an essential step in aligning with European standards for secure travel documentation.
Greece Publicly Backs Armenia’s Visa-Free Ambitions
Adding further momentum, the Ambassador of Greece to Armenia, Christos Sofianopoulos, recently reaffirmed Greece’s full support for Armenia’s visa liberalisation aspirations.
Following his meeting with Minister Sargsyan, both sides stressed the importance of deepening bilateral ties, particularly in the context of Armenia’s growing integration with the European Union.
Minister Sargsyan expressed her commitment to ongoing reforms and cross-border cooperation, which she said are crucial for ensuring long-term visa-free access for Armenian citizens to the EU.
