Moroccan and Algerian nationals continue to represent some of the highest numbers of Schengen visa applications from Africa in 2024. While France remains the top Schengen visa destination, Spain visa applications from these groups are rising steadily.
According to recent Schengen visa statistics 2024 published by SchengenVisaInfo, Moroccans submitted over 606,800 Schengen visa applications this year, ranking fourth globally behind China, Turkey, and India. Historically, France has been the primary destination for Moroccan Schengen visa applicants, but Spain Schengen visa demand is growing rapidly, attracting thousands of Moroccan nationals.
Similarly, Algerians—ranking as the sixth largest nationality group for Schengen visa applications with 544,634 submissions in 2024—also show increasing interest in Spain. However, France Schengen visa remains the preferred choice for most Algerian applicants.
France’s Share of Moroccan Schengen Visa Applications Declines Slightly
In 2024, 46.5% of Moroccan Schengen visa applications were submitted for France, totaling 282,153 applications. This is a slight decrease from 2023, when France received 52.4% of Moroccan visa applications (310,057 applications). Meanwhile, Spanish Schengen visa applications from Morocco increased from 32% in 2023 to 35.76% in 2024, with the number of Spanish visa applications rising from 189,126 to 216,985.
Algerians Remain Loyal to France but Diversify Schengen Visa Options
Algerian applicants continue to favor France, submitting 64.7% of their Schengen visa applications (352,295) to French consulates in 2024, up from 58.86% in 2023. Conversely, applications for Spanish visas by Algerians declined from 26.9% to 22.77%. Notably, Algerians are diversifying their applications by applying more frequently to other Schengen countries beyond France and Spain.
Morocco and Algeria: Leading African Countries in Schengen Visa Applications
Morocco and Algeria are among the largest African nationalities applying for Schengen visas, trailing only behind Chinese nationals globally. In 2024, Algerians accounted for 11.47% of all Schengen visa applications submitted to France, while Moroccans represented 9.18%.
Conclusion
Despite France remaining the primary destination for Schengen visa applicants from Morocco and Algeria, Spain is increasingly becoming a preferred option, particularly among Moroccans. These shifting trends underscore changing migration patterns and growing interest in alternative Schengen visa countries in Europe.
