Germany continues to strengthen its position as a leading European destination for Indian travellers, registering a sharp increase in Schengen visa applications during the first quarter of 2025. This trend, consistent with previous years, underscores the growing interest among Indian nationals in visiting Germany for tourism, education, and business purposes.

According to Georg Enzweiler, Deputy Chief of Mission at the German Embassy in India, Schengen visa applications submitted by Indian passport holders rose by nearly 20% in the first three months of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. The announcement was made during a joint press conference hosted by the German Embassy in India and the German National Tourist Board.

Enzweiler highlighted that this surge reflects a broader upward trend in travel interest from India and attributed the rise to several contributing factors, including improved connectivity, streamlined processes, and Germany’s appeal as a culturally rich and economically dynamic country.

While specific approval rates for visa applications were not disclosed during the press briefing, Enzweiler affirmed that the German authorities are committed to maintaining accessibility for Indian nationals. He reassured travellers that existing visa regulations—such as eligibility for multiple-entry and longer-validity visas—will remain unchanged. Moreover, efforts are underway to fully digitalize the visa application process, aimed at reducing processing times and improving user experience.

Surge in Indian Tourism to Germany in 2024

The increase in visa applications aligns with a notable rise in tourism figures recorded in 2024. According to recently released data, overnight stays by Indian tourists in Germany reached 897,841 last year—an increase of 8.6% compared to 826,703 in 2023.

In addition to a higher volume of tourists, the duration of stays has also grown. Indian travellers spent an average of 9.6 nights in Germany in 2024, up from 9.3 nights the previous year. This trend toward longer visits not only reflects deeper cultural engagement and travel experiences but also signals increased expenditure from Indian visitors in Germany’s hospitality, retail, and tourism sectors.

Tourism officials have noted that longer stays typically lead to higher spending, offering a significant boost to the local economy. This increase in tourism revenue is being welcomed by Germany’s travel and hospitality industries, especially as countries work to recover fully from the global downturn in travel caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Enhanced Air Connectivity Driving Growth

One of the primary drivers behind the spike in travel demand is the improved air connectivity between India and Germany. A growing number of direct flight routes and increased flight frequency between major Indian cities and German destinations have made travel more accessible and convenient for Indian nationals.

Airlines have expanded their offerings, including direct flights to key hubs such as Frankfurt, Munich, and Berlin, enabling smoother travel for students, business professionals, and tourists alike. This enhanced connectivity has also supported Germany's broader strategy of positioning itself as a central gateway for Indian visitors exploring the Schengen Area.

Rising Interest in Schengen Destinations Beyond Germany

While Germany remains a top choice for Indian travellers, interest in other Schengen countries is also growing steadily. France, in particular, has experienced a consistent increase in both visa applications and overnight stays from Indian nationals. The broader trend reflects a rising middle class in India with increasing disposable income and a strong appetite for international travel, particularly to Europe.

As more Indian travellers explore Europe, the role of Germany as a hub for business, education, and tourism continues to evolve. With sustained diplomatic and tourism-focused efforts, the relationship between the two countries is poised for deeper engagement in the years ahead.

Looking Ahead

With digital transformation efforts underway in the visa application system and strong bilateral ties between Germany and India, the outlook for future travel and collaboration remains positive. As Germany prepares for the summer travel season, officials expect the upward trajectory in applications and tourist arrivals from India to continue.

Germany’s commitment to accessibility, innovation, and partnership is setting the stage for a new chapter in Indo-German relations—one characterized by greater mobility, stronger cultural exchange, and deeper economic ties.
