Belgium has officially inaugurated a new visa processing centre in Rabat, the capital city of Morocco, designed exclusively for Moroccan students applying for long-term student visas to Belgium.
The new centre, which complements the existing Belgian visa facility in Casablanca, was launched to streamline student visa procedures and strengthen consular cooperation between Belgium and Morocco. According to Belgian officials, the Rabat centre will simplify the application process, reduce logistical burdens, and increase processing efficiency.
A Strategic Move to Improve Student Visa Services
Joris Salden, the Director General for Consular Affairs at Belgium’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasized the importance of this development. “The opening of this centre is a major step forward in improving access to Belgian consular services. It reflects the strong bilateral ties between Belgium and Morocco,” said Salden.
He also confirmed that the Rabat visa centre will be dedicated exclusively to student visa applications in its initial phase. “We are delighted to welcome more Moroccan students to Belgium,” Salden added.
Simplified Process for Moroccan Students
Previously, Moroccan students aspiring to study in Belgium had to make two separate visits — first to the Belgian Embassy in Rabat for a study questionnaire, and then to Casablanca to submit their visa applications. With the launch of the new Rabat visa centre, students will now be able to submit their applications directly in Rabat, while still completing the study questionnaire at the embassy.
This upgrade eliminates the need for time-consuming travel between cities and is expected to significantly enhance the student visa application experience.
Faster Visa Processing Through Digitalisation
In line with Belgium’s goal to offer efficient and transparent services, the visa system is being further digitalized. “Digital transformation enables us to process applications faster and with greater accuracy,” Salden explained.
Belgian Ambassador to Morocco, Gilles Heyvaert, reaffirmed that this initiative aligns with Belgium’s broader strategy to ensure quality visa services for Moroccan nationals. “Our two countries are strategic partners. This visa centre reflects our commitment to further deepening our diplomatic and educational ties,” Heyvaert stated.
Belgium Student Visa Statistics – 2024
According to recent data from SchengenVisaInfo, Belgium received 16,925 visa applications from Moroccan nationals in 2024. Out of these, 10,404 visas were approved, while 6,249 applications were denied. The new visa centre in Rabat is expected to improve these figures by offering better support to student applicants.
